Another Poll

First, bring to mind the movie, "A League of Their Own." Go to the part near the end of the movie where the sisters are in the final game of the World Series. It's the last play and the younger, less famous (and I might add, less talented) sister, Kit, is on base while the older sister, the belle-of-the-league Dottie, is the catcher. A ball is hit, and Kit is on her way to home base: a safe arrival would seal the win for her team. Not surprisingly, the ball and Kit seem to be destined to meet at home plate. As the movie tempo slows, Kit is sliding into home plate, Dottie is catching then ball, and then Dottie is dropping the ball...literally. Kit is carried off on shoulders to wild cheers while Dottie gets to her feet.

So here is the poll. First, tell me your birth order (are you the oldest, youngest, etc.). Then tell me whether you believe Dottie intentionally dropped the ball or not. This poll is certainly not cryptic; I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. I'm just curious as to how others feel.

Hi Erin. I am the oldest in my family, and I believe that she did intentionally drop the ball. Not only was she a protective older sister and wanted Kit to get some recognition, but she was the most skilled player in the league and would not have dropped that ball for any other player.
I love that movie.

Hi Erin. I'm the youngest.

Gosh, I've never come to a decision with this - and it drives me crazy! I can see both ways:

Dottie dropped it on purpose due to the reasons that Amber listed. She could care less about the fame/recognitition but knew how much it would mean to her sister.

Dottie didn't drop it on purpose because she wasn't that type of person. She just didn't play silly games and was always so serious - especially when it came to ball-playing. Wasn't there some other occasion in the movie that she could have helped Kit out, but didn't??? I don't remember.

But I think I want to rent that movie soon! It's great. I wonder if boys like it? I'll have to ask Ben. . .

I'm the oldest and I think she dropped it intentionally. I think she didn't play silly games, but at that instant, I believe she knew that a winning a game in the grand scheme of things didn't matter. Her husband was at war, her sister was her family, and she realized that that relationship was more important than winning a baseball game.

I think that the oldest children will almost always think that the drop was intentional because it's in their nature to have certain level of arrogance mixed with martyrism. They all want to believe that they are just so benevolent and charitable. Well let me tell you that my older siblings would also believe that she dropped the ball on purpose and then they would believe themselves superior morally because they did the “right” thing? So here is my prediction on the outcome of this survey. The oldests will almost without fail say that it was on purpose. The other will most likely follow suit with Emily, being able to see both sides but not really committing to one or the other whole heartedly. That is what I think. Tell me what you think.

I forgot, - Emily, this movie can be synonymous with boys. If a guy likes the movie, he also probably likes boys. If he does not like the movie, he also probably does not like boys.

I think that I'm feeling a bit cantankerous today?

I'm the oldest and I haven't seen this movie forever, but I sort of remember thinking she dropped it because she was done with the game and all the fame. I just got back from spending the weekend with my family and I don't feel like my siblings need any help from me. They are all rockstars and I could learn a few lessons from them.

yes, daniel, that is exactly how i think it will turn out. but i just wanted to see what others thought and how that related to birth order.

sorry E didn't mean to spoil any surprises. Just spouting off some of my random brain vomit. I am actually pretty interested in how this one turns out. It sparked a fun little convo with KT and I. She is the oldest and loves the movie so much. She can quote the whole thing from start to finish and she feels that there is not a question - the drop was intentional. I as stated before am not the oldest and could kinda go either way.
