Help

I was recently asked to teach a class at our ward's Super Saturday in November. I am very excited about this (no sarcasm present). I gave the enrichment committee a bunch of suggestions of things that I could competently teach and was prepared to let them decide. When the enrichment leader reported to me that anything I submitted would be great and that I should choose which I want to do, I was a little disappointed because, well, that makes it a little harder on me. (Remember that I'm not that great at making decisions.) So now I need your help. I'll show you the five projects from which I am choosing one to teach. Tell me which one you'd be more likely to do (and pay for) at a Super Saturday enrichment. Thanks!

These are bags that I've not yet tried, but think that they would be VERY easy, as they are made out of placemats (how cool is that?!). The women would be asked to supply their own placemats and I would bring the webbing and extra fabrics. The cost would be really inexpensive, maybe around $2-$3.

These are actual placemats that I have made. The cost here would also be minimal, maybe $5.

This is a bag that I made and used during my short-lived primary career. The cost here would be about the same as the placemats, $5.

This is a family tree made for my in-laws. The cost of the trees would be expensive because of the frames. I believe they were about $20 per frame, so about $45 for the entire project.

This final picture is a needlepoint display of President Hinckley's 6 B's (this was before he added the others!). If you wanted the frame, the cost is around $12. But if you wanted to do something else with it (e.g., pillow), then only $2. The frame can be painted, but when I give this as a gift, I usually leave it natural so that the receiver can decide what color best matches her decor.

I thought you couldn't have any sewing involved?

I think I vote for the placemat-bag. That'd be the one I'd be most willing to do and pay for.

All cute though!

Well, I would want to do them all, but will chose one for your sake. I think you should do the placemats. This is for a few reasons. #1 They are inexpensive and CUTE CUTE. #2 They will appeal to the most number of sisters - all age groups. #3 They most likely require minimal sewing. My experience has been that if you have a project with sewing - even though it may seem pretty straight forward and simple to you - you are asking for trouble. A lot of girls don't know basic sewing skills so then you end up with broken needles, frustrated sisters, and a bunch of unfinished projects. I think the family tree thing is great, but a bit pricey and the cross-stitch is so cute, but I wonder if they could finish it that day. I always think it's important to provide things people can finish that day and take home.
Good luck! I still want to know how to make the placemats myself.

We are actually going to be making placemat bags at our enrichment saturday this month! I am very excited.

One question on the actual placemats. How many placemats would each sister make? because i would want a set, and if you are only making one or two it might not be very useful in the future.

i think for the cost and finished product the placemat bags are your best bet. useful for adults, teens, and kids...

I would definitely sign up for the placemats, but the bags are really cute too.

We did the placemat bags at a Super Saturday and it was the most popular class ever! I loved it and I have made several since then. I do however, really like the placemats but I agree with Linda about how many you would be making. I would want a set. In fact I do want a set! How did you make them? Willing to send me directions?

My SIL in Texas made me on of the placemat bags (she made it at a Super Saturday, I'm sure) - they're really fun. The one I would most want would be the last one (the 6 b's), but I do agree with the comments that many people might not be able to do it and not be able to get it done that day. I love it though!!

my vote is also for the placemat bags or placemats. they both look easy and not too time consuming. I'm such a sucker for bags though, especially big ones that can haul a lot in one go!

I love the family tree project, too but that is a bit pricey (sigh).

First off, ALL of them are excellent ideas. Now for the answer.

I would most likely complete project #1, 2, or 3. And minimal cost does help. #4 concerns me, because A)cost, and B)it looks complicated & I might be scared away and #5 REALLY concerns me because I know there is a needle and thread involved, which means I am likely to attempt, begin, but NEVER finish. For what it's worth.

I vote for the placemat bags!

p.s. I'm (finally) making your baked oatmeal tomorrow. After hearing so much about it I couldn't go another day without trying your recipe.

Erin, remember a few while ago when you blogged about making that blogging connection and finding someone that you know by following the links. Well, it only took me Three months and Two mouse clicks from my blog page to find this http://nmdumas.blogspot.com/
If you go there (total stranger) you will find that there is a catagory on the right side of the page that says "Random links we like" Check who is on the random links.
I asked the blog author why the link was there she said that it was just luck. She one day found the site while surfing and decided that she wanted to link to it. Cool huh?
