Music Request
From the bonus I was given last year, C and I treated ourselves: he got a Wii, and I got a Bose SoundDock for my iPod. (We did put the rest in savings however. We're not that irresponsible.) The SoundDock has saved my life at work. Podcasts have successfully kept me awake when I thought I just couldn't take it anymore. But I can't wait for the day when I quit this job and can have the SoundDock as our at-home stereo. Before that happens, we are going to need some serious amounts of new music. Given that our current radio listening consists of only 45 minutes of a morning talk show, a smattering of regular radio while in the car later in the day, and "Stained Glass Bluegrass" on Sundays, I just don't know where to begin in this search for new music. I typically like stuff that is more simple. For example, a woman and her guitar are enough for me; I don't need a full orchestra. I also enjoy oldies and classic rock. I like bluegrass as long as it's more bluegrass than country. Obviously, I do not like country, and I think C and I have enough rap to last us a bit. So does anyone have any suggestions?

Oh little e, you have come to the right place. In my side life, I'm a bit of an indie music aficionado. Making and swapping CDs with my family has been one of the highlights of the last couple of years. Do you want in on the game? I can copy you some CDs - which give a nice sampling of a bunch of artists. If you like any of them I can get you more.
In the short run, you might like Feist or Mates of State. For a fuller sound you might enjoy The Arcade Fire or The Decemberists. My Space is a good place to get a sample of each of these. (hope the nazi govn't doesn't block My Space)
i am finding nickel creek highly enjoyable right now. of course if you hate it then you didn't get the suggestion from me :)
ohhh, ben and i both really enjoy nickel creek - good bluegrass, not country.
that's all i have to say. you know me and so i know you aren't expecting any recommendations from me!
btw, i can't remember the last time we listened to the radio in our car. NPR is the usual. followed by CDs.
well, okay, maybe i'll give you one suggestion: Don Williams. i love him. he's old-time country, the good stuff. not the crud you hear today.
i guess i did have a few more things to say. . .
a friend highly recommends Pandora radio for finding new groups. I tried it a few times, but I'm not by my computer that much during the day. I guess you choose some tunes you line and then it suggests similar sounds.
An Irish band this same friend recommended is Cherish the Ladies. I've yet to check them out.
I'm pretty musically inept but I love the exposure I occasionally get from NPR's Music Moment or whatever it is. good luck! : )
Here are some of my recommendations Erin....I'm sure some if it isn't for everyone but you might like something!
Dolores O'Riordian, the lead singer from The Cranberries, just put out a solo album. It's called Are You Listening? It's total chick music, but I like it. (Ordinary Day is my favorite track, about her little girl)
Sixpence None the Richer's album Divine Discontent is a good one too (A Million Parachutes and Melody of You are my fav tracks).
You said you don't like current country but I really like The Wreckers album, Stand Still, Look Pretty. That track is also my favorite.
